Ceramic-to-Metal Sealing and Hermetic Brazing
INTA Technologies Corporation utilizes atmosphere controlled furnaces, air furnaces and vacuum furnaces to form brazed assemblies. Brazing can be done without any plating if necessary. INTA offers copper brazing, silver brazing, nioro, and many other types. A popular braze joint consists of two nickel plated surfaces joined with a copper/silver brazing alloy (CuSil). However there are many alloys (such as AuSn, AgSn, etc) that can be applied depending on the application conditions or assembly constraints.

Kovar (Ni/Fe/Co) is the metal commonly used to braze to metallized oxide ceramics (94% - 98% alumina) due to its near matching coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Many other materials are also brazed by INTA including most metals and metal alloys.

INTA can provide brazed assemblies that are helium leak tight to 10 to the -9 cc/sec. The rate is dependent on materials and brazing processes used. INTA brazes to the MIL-B-7883B specification. INTA offers Type I and Type II, Grade A and Grade B.

Typical ceramic to metal seals consist of 96% alumina and Kovar with a copper-silver alloy braze material but many other options are available. In general, we need a 94% or higher alumina to braze. A dense, pressed alumina works well but extruded alumina can also be brazed.
