Why are rhodium coatings used?

Rhodium coatings are used for many reasons.  Rhodium is a precious metal (means non-oxidizing) and part of the platinum group.  Rhodium is often used to provide a durable and scratch-proof surface.  Rhodium is often used to prevent galling on contacts and mechanical components.  Rhodium provides a very hard finish.  Rhodium is popular for very high temperature applications.

Is rhodium expensive?

Rhodium is one of the most expensive type of plating offered by INTA Technologies due to costly raw materials.  A typical rhodium plating thickness is very thin, therefore, not much rhodium is used on each part which cuts costs.  One ounce of rhodium costs approximately $7,000.00 USD.
